Types of tooth abscess may be categorised on the basis of regions in tooth.

  • Periapical Abscess – infection inside the tooth where the tooth pulp is located.
  • Periodontal Abscess – this abscess is at the supporting bone structure of the tooth.
  • Gingival abscess – the infection is only in gum tissues and do not affect the tooth or periodontal ligaments.

Causes :

The main cause of dental abscess is the bacterial infection which may occur due to:

  • Poor dental hygiene.
  • Sugary and starchy food contains carbohydrates which encourages bacteria to grow.
  • A failed root canal treatment may also lead to forming of abscess.
  • Dental procedures that accidently create periodontal pockets.
  • Poor immune system.

  • Swollen gums.
  • A bad or salty taste in mouth.
  • Sensitivity to cold and hot liquids.

Treatment :

There is no option of treating abscess at home, one has to consult the dentist for it. The following

dental procedures may be suggested by the dentist as per examination:

  • Pain treatment:-painkillers may be taken to reduce the pain but a dentist must be visited soon.
  • Antibiotics:- A dose of antibiotic may cure the abscess by killing the bacteria.
  • Incision:- the abscess may need a cut to be made to drain out the pus containing bacteria, a local anesthesia may be suggested.
  • Treatment of periodontal abscess:- the periodontal pocket is cleaned by draining it, then the surface of the root is smoothened with scaling below the gum line. This is done to avoid any further infection and quick heal up.
  • Treatment of periapical abscess:- root canal is done to remove the abscess, the damaged tissue is removed by making a hole in tooth and then filling the space to avoid further infection.
  • Surgery:- If infection re-occurs in case of periapical or periodontal abscess, then surgery is the option left with oral surgeon.

If the abscess is not treated well in time, there may arise some complications:

  • Dental cyst formation.
  • Osteomyelitis- the bacteria of abscess gets in blood stream and infects the bone.
  • Ludwig’s angina – infection in the floor of mouth when bacteria spreads, there starts pain in neck and tongue, in some cases breathing difficulty may arise.
  • Maxillary sinusitis- bacteria spreads in small spaces behind the cheekbones, it can be painful and feverish.

In order to prevent having tooth abscess, one should take good care of tooth and gums.

  • Brushing tooth 2 times a day by toothpaste approved by ADA.
  • Using dental floss to clean between teeth.
  • Regular visits to dentist.
  • Eat healthy diet with limited sugary food and drinks.
  • Use antiseptic or fluoride mouth rinse to prevent tooth decay.

The pain of tooth is so severe that is hard to explain, the one who has felt can understand it. Using clove oil on paining tooth is good remedy for little relief but it cannot be cured without dentists help. If left untreated for long by using painkillers to stop pain, the infection can spread from one tooth to other.
